Netflix’s Lost in Space might be the most enjoyable sci-fi show you’re probably not watching. It’s brilliantly cast, it knows exactly when to let Parker Posey do her thing and when to pull pack for a father-daughter tearjerker episode, and it’s both entirely earnest yet never takes itself too seriously. The Robinsons have to figure out how to sail their spaceship across an alien sea! Also there’s a chicken, and an episode where the parents kind of have it out while trapped in a sinking space ATV. The situations can be absurd, but the character work is excellent and complicated, as Emmet Asher-Perrin discussed in their review of season two. These people are messy. They make so many mistakes. And I love them for it.
And they’re finally back for the show’s third and final season!
The perfect cast includes Captain Flint Toby Stephens (Black Sails) as Space Dad John Robinson; Molly Parker (Deadwood) as Space Mom Maureen Robinson; Parker Posey as “Doctor” Smith; and Ignacio Serricchio as Don West. The reboot was developed by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, whose combined resume is very different than this show (they co-wrote The Last Witch Hunter and Dracula Untold, two ridiculous movies I nonetheless somewhat enjoyed).
A lot of wild things happened at the end of season two, which ends (SPOILERS if you are not caught up) with a ship full of children following a signal to an unknown star system. How the families will reunite is just one of the questions season three has to answer—and the teaser gives little away, except that Will Robinson (Maxwell Jenkins) seems to be on his own, given that he’s making a recording that indicates “things didn’t work out the way I hoped they would. …I thought I could save everybody.”
Lost in Space makes its final landing on Netflix on December 1st. This is only a teaser, so we should get a full trailer before then!
